  1. Dude this was a blast to read. I actually collect game adverts from 90s/00s so eBay leaves me with empty pockets some months. I’m from England/UK and our gaming magazine adverts were also wild. I was 14yo in 1997 so these gaming magazines (and adverts) for me were some of my fondest memories. I remember even thinking they were risqué back then, they absolutely gave 0 fucks and I loved it! It’s cool to see the USA also went just as edgy though the UK didn’t lean into the guns, murder, bombings angle as much (kinda messed up, looking back at how blatant EGM could be). Anyway just wanted to say I had a lot of fun reading over these man. Appreciated!

    1. Thanks for the comment, I had a ton of fun researching and writing this. I was actually quite surprised at just how unhinged the ads were back before I even started getting into video game magazines. While I do think that EGM made for a good case study, I know that there were a bunch of crazy ads out there that I wasn’t able to see because I stuck with one primary source… kinda makes me want to do a part 2, but the amount of research that would take is daunting to say the least. In any case, glad you enjoyed this! 😀
